Mentees and Mentors, 2010
In 2000, the Cochrane HIV/AIDS Group recognised that many of its reviews had a focus of little relevance to low- and middle-income countries. To remedy this problem, we created the HIV/AIDS Mentoring Programme at our Satellite Editorial Base in Cape Town with the aim of increasing the capacity of authors in sub-Saharan Africa to produce high-quality systematic reviews of greater relevance to the region. Authors working on reviews of HIV/AIDS topics are linked with more experienced authors, who provide guidance and methods expertise throughout the review process.
To date, we have had 26 Mentees from South Africa, 12 from Nigeria, 3 from Cameroon, 3 from Kenya, 1 from The Gambia and 1 from Uganda. Thirteen of our Mentors have come from South Africa, as well as one each from Australia, Canada, Kenya, Nigeria and the USA.
In addition, we have convened four Review Completion Schools to date in Cape Town. The Schools specifically allocate time for authors not only to meet face-to-face but also have time to discuss and work on their reviews.
You are invited to participate as:
- a Mentor
- or as an author in the programme
